Conquest Through Determination
We are now accepting submissions to CONQUEST THROUGH
DETERMINATION.
The time of Steampunk is upon us. From the moment the world first watched Jules Verne’s Nautilus explore the mysterious leagues of the sea, to this summer’s release of Cowboys and Aliens, Steampunk has become a fascination, neigh, an obsession to those who see the world through slightly different colored goggles.
Pill Hill Press salutes this vision and is now seeking stunners of stories from today’s Steampunks.

For generations of literary inspiration, look to
Morlock Night by K.W. Jeter, The Difference Engine by William
Gibson and Bruce Sterling, or Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, among
others.
Hollywood has long been a fan, as is evidenced by
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Wild Wild West, 9, and on
television, Warehouse 13.
All of Steampunk; from
literature, to art, to fashion, is encompassed in The Steampunk Bible,
by Jeff Vandermeer.
So give us your best, your Gaslight, and
your Clockwork. Give us your Dieselpunk, your Boilerpunk, and your Weird
Westerns.
Set them in the foggy streets of Olde London, the deserts of
Arizona, or something new and exciting at one of the frigid poles. Travel
through the air, or explore the sea; just make that elements of Steampunk are
featured and bring the story together.
About
the contest…
Editor’s Choice Award (Miles Boothe): $100.00
The Editor’s Choice Award will be picked by the editor/compiler of the anthology; decision will be at his sole discretion
Editor’s Choice Award (Deana Roberts): $100.00
The Editor’s Choice Award will be picked by the editor/compiler of the anthology; decision will be at her sole discretion
Contributor’s Choice Award: $50.00
The Contributor’s Choice Award will be picked by the contributing authors of the anthology. When the anthology is compiled, copyedited and typeset, we will send out an interior
proof to the authors to check their stories for last minute copyediting/formatting errors. At this time, contributing authors have the option to read through the other stories and vote for their favorite story. Authors can’t vote for their own story, and each contributing author can only vote once. No contributing author is required to vote, but all authors who do are entered into a “consolation drawing” for a free copy of the anthology.
Consolation Drawing:
Every contributing author who casts a vote for the Contributor’s Choice Award will be entered into a drawing for a free copy of the anthology. We will draw THREE names at random upon publication and mail out a free copy of COURAGE THROUGH DETERMINATION to the winning authors.

Hmmmm...interesting. I've been looking for a new theme to try and always wondered about Steampunk. This might be the prompt to get me going. Thinking hat on I reckon, thats a thinking hat run by steam.
Hey folks, I just wanted to say how excited I am for this antho, and how much I can't wait to read the stories!
A few of us had kicked around some western ideas in the Cowboys & Aliens thread, and then the idea for a book expanded into a full Steampunk volume.
This one includes Weird Westerns, Dieselpunk, Clockwork, and all of the variations. I'll have more resources and suggestions in a bit, but I just couldn't wait to post!
Cheers!
Miles
I have something started that I'll definitely be working on sending in--once I get it all finished up!
Hi
I sent a story in. Hope it's steampunk-y enough for you.
David Perlmutter
Great contest idea! So great, in fact, I've already sent you a rather long Steampunk mystery to solve...
Hell, two submitted already! I've just about managed to come up with an idea, a central character and a fantabulous machine, all need to do is fit them together, add some coal and we're away.
Hey Phil, that is nothing. I only stumble on this one today and I haven't come up with an idea yet.
Jessy that cover is to die for. May be I should make a deal with the devil just once to get into this fantastic anthology.
Note - if my muse comes back from whereever it hides from me.
Hi Robert. Well I had an idea, since rejected it but have now come up with a variation on it, which I think works better.
By the way thanks for submitting to my wordpress site, I'll return the compliment once my internet stays on for more than 10 minutes at home!
Hello Steampunks!
I wanted to wait and read a few submissions before I came back to really get the conversation going. I wanted to see what folks had in mind for Steampunk stories, and to see if others were confused by the genre.
I'm happy to say that the stories are coming in, and they are looking good!
For the folks still wondering about this one, I'm going ot start posting links that talk about the genre - and I'll start with Wikipedia's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk
As you can see, Steampunk has branched off into many sub-genres, all of which you are encouraged to submit!
I'll be back with more in the coming days, as well as some additional thoughts and inspirations.
Cheers!
Miles
The best description of Steampunk I've ever heard was given by Angelia Sparrow.
Imagine if Jules Verne wrote contemporary fiction for Popular Mechanics.
I love love LOVE that explanation.

That is good! Please don't hesitate to post links to articles!
That is a FABULOUS description. I always tell the uninitiated that Steampunk is "Victorian Science Fiction."
We went to Albion, a steampunk convention in San Jose a few months ago, and it was deliriously delightful. The best thing was watching people staying at the hotel who weren't associated with the event goggling (hah-get it-goggling) at all of these strange apparitions.
My husband and I are going to World Con Renovation in Reno next week, and we are so excited. It will be geek heaven... and of course there is the Girl Genius Ball (Steampunk costume, or any costume acutally, encouraged).
Before I knew what steampunk actually was, I was a fan of a short lived tv show called "The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne" (aired in 2000). I was even more depressed about its cancellation after I realized how big the world of steampunk actually was :( No dvds of the season are available, but if you look around online, you can find episodes. I suggest them for the steampunk novice who doesn't mind a bit of cheesy fun.
Glad to hear that my giant submission didn't make your eyes bleed, Miles. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I wish there was an article. I was at a panel at FandomFest in Louisville when she said that. I've never been so into a quote that I wrote it down on spot before, but there it is, scrawled into the back of my Dreams of Steam antho.

Miles, the link is an excellent site to jog a persons memory. I thought of an anime called FullMetal Alchemist. It is a cross between alchemy and steampunk. I think I have something to start but it just becoming an idea.
So would a "Lost Word" (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle vintage) story work?
As long as it included technology not usualy associated with the time that the characters inhabit, or are from, which ought to be a cool twist.

Because I have an idea and it'll combine some of my favorite things that aren't vampires and werewolves.
